Experimental Study of Self Modulation Instability of ATF Electron Beam

چکیده
In this paper, We investigate numerically the development of self-modulation instability (SMI) with electron bunch parameter available at Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The results show that the long bunch drives wakefields with periods one to one fifth of the bunch length in plasmas with various densities. Both 50 pC and 1 nC electron bunches are investigated for the SMI development. All the simulations are performed with the 2D-cylindrically symmetric partilcle-in-cell code OSIRIS [1].

Progress in Experimental Study of Current Filamentation Instability*
Current Filamentation Instability, CFI, is of central importance for the propagation of relativistic electron beams in plasmas. CFI could play an important role in the generation of magnetic fields and radiation in the afterglow of gamma ray bursts and also in energy transport for the fast-igniter inertial confinement fusion concept. Simulations were conducted with the particle-in-cell code Qui...
متن کاملUpgrades of the Experimental Setup for Electron Beam Self-modulation Studies at Pitz
The self-modulation instability is fundamental for the plasma wakefield acceleration experiment of the AWAKE collaboration at CERN where this effect is supposed to be used to generate proton bunches short enough for producing high acceleration fields. For ease of experimentation it was decided to set up a supporting experiment at the electron accelerator PITZ (Photo Injector Test facility at DE...
متن کاملTemporal profile of the LCLS photocathode ultraviolet drive laser tolerated by the microbunching instability ∗
The high quality LCLS electron beam generated in the photoinjector is subject to many instabilities in the downstream acceleration and compression. The instability can be initiated by any density modulation of the electron beam generated at the photocathode. In this paper, we prescribe the tolerance on the initial electron beam density modulation possibly introduced by the ultraviolet (uv) lase...
متن کاملVacuum Laser Acceleration Experiment Perspective at Brookhaven National Lab-accelerator Test Facility
This first stage experiment is a Proof-of-Principle to support our novel vacuum laser acceleration (VLA) theory, published previously. Simulations show that based on current experimental conditions at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Accelerator Test Facility (ATF), an electron beam with initial energy of 15 MeV can get net energy gain from an intense CO2 laser beam. The difference of electro...
متن کاملAcceleration of Electrons in a Self-Modulated Laser Wakefield
Acceleration of electrons in a self-modulated laser-wake eld is investigated. The generated electron beam is oberved to have a multi-component beam pro le and its energy distribution undergoes discrete transitions as the conditions are varied. These features can be explained by simple simulations of electron propagation in a 3-D plasma wave. Understanding the dynamics of electron acceleration i...
